The regulations in NSW regarding food safety mandate that hospitality establishments must appoint a designated Food Safety Supervisor within their organisation. This individual is tasked with overseeing and implementing best practices in safe food handling.

This course equips participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively fulfill the role of a Food Safety Supervisor.

Vigil International College is an approved Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) training provider as listed on the NSW Food Authority website.

Course Duration:

This course is delivered online, and you can study at your own pace.

This course consists of the following:

  1. Online Learning & Assessments: Self-Paced and takes 12-16 hours to complete.
  2. Observer Reports: Total of 16 hours (completed on 4 separate occasions).
Online Learning & Assessments:

Upon enrolment, you will be issued your Login details to our Online Learning Portal. This portal will contain your online course, online assessments, and observer reports.

There are various sections in this course, and you will receive access to numerous interactive learning materials. At the end of each section, you will be required to complete a series of multiple-choice questions.

Observer Reports:

NOTE: You will have 6 weeks to complete the course and if you require an extension, speak to our Student Support Team.

There are no formal pre-requisites required to enter this course.

However, Vigil International College requires students to meet the following criteria:

  1. Have an adequate level of Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN) Skills; and
  2. Have basic computer skills; and
  3. Have a Photo ID*; and
  4. Have a USI Number; and
  5. Have the resources required (see list below).

*You must have a physical Photo ID, such as a Driver's Licence or Passport. An International Photo ID is acceptable.

Resources Required:

Students enrolling in this course must have access to the following resources:

  • Laptop/Computer
  • Internet
  • Acrobat Reader
  • Photo, audio, and video recording equipment (e.g., phone, camera, etc.)
  • A person with a minimum of 12 months experience in the food industry (refer to “Delivery Method”).

The cost of undertaking the course is $115, this includes the NSW Food Safety Supervisor (Blue & Orange) Certificate Fee. You pay nothing more!

This course is designed for students who are looking to become a Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) for their employer/business and are looking to obtain their NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certification.

International Students can also study this course and obtain their certification.

Who can be an FSS?

The FSS is nominated by the owner of a food business and may be the business owner, manager, or employee (for example, the chef) provided they:

  • are not an FSS for any other food premises or mobile catering business, and
  • can train and supervise other people in the business to ensure safe food handling occurs (as per the Food Act 2003 –Section 106B(1c)).
  • are reasonably available and be easily contacted (such as by phone).

Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive the following:

  1. NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate; AND
  2. Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised Skill Set, “SITSS00069 - Food Safety Supervision Skill Set”.
NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate:

This certificate is also known as the “Blue & Orange Certificate” and is issued by the NSW Food Authority.

Vigil Training College will provide you with both digital and hard copy of the Certificate. The hard copy of the Certificate will be posted to you within 10 business days through Australia Post.

This certificate is valid for 5 years.

Statement of Attainment:

Students will receive a Statement of Attainment for the Nationally Recognised Skill Set, “SITSS00069 - Food Safety Supervision Skill Set” for successfully completing this course.

The Skill Set consists of the following Units of Competencies:

  1. SITXFSA005- Use hygienic practices for food safety
  2. SITXFSA006- Participate in safe food handling practices

NSW Food Authority does NOT allow the use of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for the purposes of issuing a Food Safety Supervisor Certificate, unless it is applied for the purposes of re-certifying a person that currently holds a Food Safety Supervisor certificate within the immediate preceding period of five years.
